Email guide
How to export your emails
Export the emails you've exchanged with one person. We group them by sender and recipient, strip quoted replies and signatures, and read only what each of you wrote.
You'll upload .mbox or .eml
Gmail
- 1In Gmail, search for the person, for example: from:name@email.com OR to:name@email.com
- 2Select all results, click the label icon, and create a new label such as Toxic.
- 3Go to takeout.google.com and click Deselect all.
- 4Tick Mail, click All Mail data included, and choose only your new label.
- 5Click Next step, then Create export. When the email arrives, download the .zip and upload it here.
Apple Mail (Mac)
- 1Create a mailbox and move or copy the emails with that person into it.
- 2Select the mailbox, then in the menu bar choose Mailbox, then Export Mailbox.
- 3Choose a folder. Mail saves a folder ending in .mbox.
- 4Open that folder and upload the file called mbox inside it.
Outlook and other apps
- 1In Outlook on the web or Mac, drag emails onto your desktop to save them as .eml files.
- 2In Thunderbird, use the free ImportExportTools NG add-on to export a folder as .mbox.
- 3Put several .eml files into one .zip, or upload the .mbox.
Good to know
- Smaller is better. A label or folder with just one person's emails keeps the file light and the report focused.
- Newsletters and one-way emails are ignored. We need a real back and forth.
- Quoted history (the “On Monday, X wrote:” part) is removed so nothing is counted twice.
Questions
Is the whole mailbox uploaded?
No. The file is read in your browser. Only statistics and a few anonymised excerpts from the chosen conversation are sent.
Does Outlook .msg or .pst work?
Not yet. Save emails as .eml instead, or open them in Apple Mail or Thunderbird and export .mbox.
My Gmail export is huge
Use a label as in step 2 so Takeout only includes the emails with that person.
